USA Approved the second amendment of 2019

The newly constituted Board of Directors of the Export-Import Bank of the United States (EXIM) on Thursday, March 13, 2025, unanimously approved the second amendment of a 2019 direct loan of up to $4.7 billion to support the export of U.S. goods and services for the development and construction of an integrated liquefied natural gas (LNG) project. The financing for the project located on the Afungi Peninsula in northern Mozambique will support the engineering, procurement, and construction of the onshore LNG plant, related facilities, and offshore activities. This marks a huge milestone in the history of the two countries.

In reaction to this announcement, on March 20 at the EXIM Bank headquarters, His Excellency Ambassador Alfredo Nuvunga met with His Excellency Acting President and Chair of EXIM Bank, James Cruse, to extend his deepest appreciation and to discuss further technical issues. Moreover, on behalf of His Excellency Daniel Chapo, President of the Republic of Mozambique, HE the Ambassador conveyed a message of appreciation to His Excellency Donald Trump, President of the United States of America, and his Government and the entire team of EXIM Bank.

Visit of His Excellency the President of Mozambique to the United States of America

His Excellency the President of Mozambique, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, visited the United States of America, in September 2023, to sign the Second Compact Agreement with the Millenium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and held other important meetings.

H.E. Ambassador Alfredo Nuvunga’s Bio

His Excellency Ambassador Alfredo Fabião Nuvunga is currently the Ambassador of the Republic of Mozambique to the United States of America, since March 2023.

Ambassador Nuvunga is a career diplomat with 34 years of experience in foreign service. He holds a master’s degree in Politics and International Relations and a B. Honors degree in International Relations and Diplomacy.

Prior to the current position, he represented his country in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and also in the African Union (AU) and the Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in Addis Ababa, as the Permanent Representative.

Ambassador Nuvunga also served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Gaberone, Botswana and in Stockholm, Sweden.

At the Headquarters, in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Ambassador Nuvunga served as Deputy Director and later Director of the Directorate for Regional and Continental Integration. Prior to that he served as Assistant Director of the State Protocol. 

Ambassador Nuvunga, at the level of senior officials, led several  Mozambican Missions to diferent meetings, particlarly within SADC and African Union.

He speaks and writes several tsonga languages and is fluent in Portuguese, English and French.
In recognition of his diplomatic achievemnts, Ambassador Nuvunga was awarded the Medal “Order of Friendship and Peace” by Presidential Decree of the Republic of Mozambique. This Medal is atributed to Mozambican nationals for the “high merits achieved in the fight for the cause of friendship, solidarity and peace in the world”.

Visit to the United States by a team from the National Institute of Communications of Mozambique (INCM)

Between the 28th to 30th June 2022, a team from the National Institute of Communications of Mozambique (INCM), visited the United States for exchange of knowledge with its US counterparts, as well as participating in the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization (ITSO) assembly.
