State of the Earth and Environment

From May 3-9, 2025, His Excellency Gustavo Sobrinho Dgedge, Secretary of State for Earth and Environment, led a high-level mission to the United States of America, with the aim of strengthening international partnerships in the areas of biodiversity conservation, sustainable development, climate finance, and integrated natural resource management. This mission was part of the Government of Mozambique’s commitment to promote a transformative approach that positions the environment as one of the main vectors of economic development and social well-being.

The mission had engagement with the following institutions: (i) the World Bank and the World Bank Group (Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency – MIGA, and the International Finance Corporation – IFC); (ii) the International Conservation Caucus Foundation ICCF Group and American Senators; and (iii) several other international civil society organizations in the environmental sector (African Wildlife Foundation – AWF, Wildlife Conservation Society – WCS, Conservation International, Rare, Frankfurt Zoological Society-US, Rain Forest Trust and Rob Walton). The Mozambican delegation included representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries (MAAP), the National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC), the Foundation for Biodiversity Conservation (BIOFUND) and the Mozambican Embassy in Washington DC.

During these engagements Mozambique did share her new approach to conservation, based on income generation, local employment, public-private partnerships and the creation of conditions for the well-being of local communities.
